Alphonse Smolinski
1926 - 2011Alphonse Joseph Smolinski age 85 of Belknap Township
passed away Sunday, December 11, 2011 at
Tendercare Health Center in Rogers City
He was born November 4, 1926 in Rogers City
to Joseph and Emilie (Chalupniczak) Smolinski
Alphonse served in the United States Navy during World War IT. On August 28, 1948
he married Florence “Elsie” Kowalski at St. Vianney Catholic Church in Detroit.
He worked as a mechanic in Detroit for many years, eventually moving to Hillman
where he partnered in a garage business with his brother-in-law. In 1961 they sold
the business and he was employed by United States Steel Corporation until his
retirement in 1990. Mr. Smolinski was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church
and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed camping, fishing, playing bingo, cards,
and the harmonica.
He is survived by:
his wife, Florence “Elsie”;
6 sons, Jerry (Diane) of Corunna, Tom (Laurie) of Rogers City, Ken of Hawks,
Pat of Rapid City, Jim (Shannon) of Belknap, and Glen (Lisa) of Rogers City;
1 daughter, Karen (Terry) Hare of Wyoming, Michigan;
21 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren;
2 brothers, Stanley (Martha) and Clarence;
4 sisters, Lucille (Ed) Benoit, Evelyn (Tom) Paulus, Angie Borough, and
Delores (Guy) Dorer;
also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by:
5 siblings, Martha Abbott, Edward, David, MaryAnn Alverson, and Blanche Pilarski.
Friends may visit at St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Thursday from 11:00 a.m.
through time of mass at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Arthur Duchnowicz officiating.
Rogers City VF W will offer a military tribute following mass.
Inurnment will take place at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery
