Bernard Tomas
1927 - 2015Bernard Thomas “Barney” Tomas age 88 of Rogers City
passed away December 14, 2015 at
Alpena Regional Medical Center,
He was born May 3, 1927 in Detroit
to Anthony and Cecelia (Porzondek) Tomaszewski.
Barney graduated from Sweetest Heart of Mary Catholic High School in
Detroit. He attended South Macomb Community College and the
University of Notre Dame. He served in the United States Army during
World War II. Barney worked as a police officer for the city of Detroit.
He retired from the city of Center Line as a Detective Sergeant in 1981.
He was a member of St, Dominic Catholic Church. Barney will be
remembered as the “Polka Prince of Presque Isle County” with his
weekend Polka Show.
Mr. Tomas is survived by:
his wife, Barbara;
2 children, Judith Sobieray of Menominee and
David Tomas of Rogers City;
8 grandchildren;
4 great grandchildren;
stepdaughter, Audrey (Michael) Penny of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois; and
2 step-grandchildren,
He was preceded in death by:
2 sisters, Cecelia and Mary Ann;
3 brothers, Hilary, Anthony and infant John.
Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 until
8:00 p.m. where Sr. Mary Michelz will lead the rosary and conduct the
prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at
St. Dominic Catholic Church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m, through time
of his memorial mass at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Arthur Duchnowicz
officiating. Posen VFW Post 7804 will offer military honors following
mass.
Burial will follow at St. Dominic Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Dominic Catholic
Church in memory of Barney Tomas.
