Carol Kromer
1929 - 2015Carol (Penniman) Kromer, 86, of 5844 Birchwood Drive,
Cheboygan, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2015
at Tendercare, Rogers City.
Carol was born May 24, 1929 to Edward C. and
Laura (Brown) Penniman of Providence, Rhode Island.
She attended and graduated from the East Providence Public School
System, She attended the Lincoln Preparitory School in Providence for
one year prior to entering Lake Erie College for Women in Painseville,
Ohio, Carol majored in Physical Education and was a shot-putter on the
track and field team, as well as a fullback on the field hockey team. She
was also active in the Dwan Club, the school’s precision swimming team.
It was as a Junior at Lake Erie that she met John Kromer, her husband to
be, a returned U.S. Navy Veteran completing his Mechanical Engineering
degree at Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, After her graduation
from Lake Erie in the spring of 1951, Carol and John were joined in Holy
Matrimony at East Providence Congregational Church on June 23, 1951.
Their union produced six children, Edward (Jennifer) Kromer of Florida;
Robert (Connie) Kromer of Gaylord; Donald Kromer of Rogers City;
Laura (Matthew) Pommerville of Ida; Philip (Megan) Kromer of
Mackinac Island; and Carol (Michael) Arakelian of Livonia. Carol also
leaves behind eleven grandchildren, She was a full time stay at home
wife and mother, devoting her time and her heart to her family.
After her husband retired from the ministry in 1986, the Kromers moved
to their Mullett Lake cottage as full time residents. Carol became active
as a coach with Special Olympics of Michigan and worked as a Title I
aide in the Cheboygan Public Schools. She was also active in the
Challenge Riders Program, providing horseback riding therapy to
handicapped children, Carol enjoyed biking on the North Central Trail
and taking her daily walks to watch the sun rise over Mullett Lake.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at
Saint John Lutheran Church, 8757 North Straits Highway, Cheboygan,
on Friday, September 11, 2015. The family will receive visitors at
10:00 am, with service at 11:00 am. Luncheon will be served immediately
afterward in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a contribution in memory of
Carol are asked to consider the St John Lutheran Educational Fund
or a charity of their choice.
