Dorothy Johnson
1931 - 2023Dorothy Anne Johnson age 91 of Cheboygan passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2023 with her family surrounding her.
Dorothy was born November 17, 1931 to Morris and Gladys (Hill) Mills in Muskegon, Michigan.
Dorothy attended Western Michigan University. She graduated in 1954 with a BA in Education. While in attendance at WMU, Dorothy met her future husband, Philip Johnson, with whom she shared three children, Steven, David and Sue. Dorothy and Phil began their lives together and her career in Plymouth, up until 1968 when they ventured up to Cheboygan. Here, Dorothy would continue her teaching career at Eastside Elementary. In 1978, the two began a new journey in Owosso. Here Dorothy was able to relay her passion of teaching to other teachers. Dorothy firmly believed that every child had a desire to learn and she wanted to do anything she could to meet that desire. She loved to watch her students learn and grow into young adults. It was an honor to her to have the chance to mentor other educators to teach with the same passion and love. In 1987, Dorothy and Phil would move back to Cheboygan after Dorothy had retired. It was here that they would send the rest of their loves together and become part of a beautiful community. Dorothy joined various associations including, The Women Golf Association, The Seedums Garden Club, The Cheboygan Community Hospital Auxiliary, and The Cheboygan and Mackinaw Island Yacht Clubs. Together, Dorothy and Phil remained lovingly involved in their community until Phil’s passing after 59 years of marriage.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Steven; daughter, Sue (Jeff); four grandchildren, Nichole, Jaymie, Alexis (Zachariah), and Audria (Daniel); one great granddaughter, Eva Mills and one on the way, Finley Robert; and sister-in-law, Nancy Johnson.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Phil; son, David; and brother-in-law, Robert.
Dorothy will be forever in our hearts and will be truly missed. “We love you!”
A Memorial service will be planned for the summer.
