Franklin Vogelheim
1921 - 2008Franklin J. Vogelheim age 87 of Rogers City passed away
September 20, 2008 at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 19, 1921 in Rogers City to
Charles and Katherine (Sommers) Vogelheim
After graduating from Rogers City High School in 1939, he attended
Northern Michigan University in Marquette for 2 years. Franklin served in
the armed forces from 1942 – 1945 as an officer in the Combat Glider
Division, taking part in 13 campaigns in the Northern Theater where he
earned the Air Medal of Honor. Franklin and his brother, Kenny flew many
missions together. They were active in the Glider Pilot Organizations for
many years. Returning home, Franklin married Betty A. Mulka at
St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Dec. 30, 1950 with Fr. C.T. Skowronski
officiating. Franklin went into partnership with his brother Karl in the
Vogelheim Lumber Co. which their father founded in 1915. Franklin later
owned and operated the Rogers City Cement Products Co., then owned and
operated Lakeside Home Improvement Co., from which he retired in
1976. Mr. Vogelheim served as vice-president of the Rogers City Chamber
of Commerce as well as serving on the Board of Directors of the
Presque Isle Bank for 16 years. He was a member of the Lions Club for
many years, a member of the Knights of Columbus and a Life Member of
V.F.W. Post #607 where he served as Vice Commander and Chaplin.
He was also very instrumental in building the present post in Rogers City.
Franklin is survived by; wife, Betty
5 children, Charles (Sandy), Claude (Pam), Curt (Annette) all of Rogers City,
Frank Jr. (Natalie) of Taylorsville, NC, and Celeste (Dennis) Szczerowski
of Big Rapids
14 grandchildren;
Erika (Mike) Malinowski, Casey Vogelheim, Chris (Kacie) Vogelheim,
Sara (Joc) Royston, Jessica Szczerowski, John Szczerowski,
David Vogelheim, Kristina Vogelheim, Heather (Chad) Cook,
Justin Vogelheim, Jenna Vogelheim, Evan Vogelheim,
Brittany Vogelheim, and Jared Vogelheim
2 great grandchildren, Tyler Eberts and Michael Malinowski
2 brothers, Richard (Janet) of Rogers City, and Paul (Mary) of
Mill Valley, CA
2 sisters, Louise Borland of Rogers City and Lauretta Vogelhcim of
San Francisco
He was preceded in death by:
4 brothers, Edward, Kenneth, Joseph, and Karl
2 sisters, Ila Hawkins and Katherine Bennett
many nieces, nephews and cousins
Memorial visitation will take place at the Beck Funeral Home on Monday,
(September 21st) from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. with V.F.W. tribute at 6:45
followed by the parish prayer service at 7:00 p.m.. Visitation will resume on
Tuesday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church from 10:30 a.m. until time of his
memorial mass at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Charles Donajkowski officiating.
Rogers City V.F.W. Post #607 will accord full military honors during the
graveside Inurnment service at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery following
mass.
