Frederick Oliva
1952 - 2020Frederick Robert Oliva age 68 of Alpena passed away August 26, 2020 at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland.
He was born January 16, 1952 in Bethesda, Maryland to Robert and Anna (Simone) Oliva.
Fred retired as a First Sergeant from the United States Army in 1995 after 21 years of service. While in the service he earned his master’s degree in Human Resources and Business Management. He was a member of the Audie Murphy Club for outstanding Soldiers. He also taught at City Colleges of Chicago. Following his retirement, he taught at Kirtland Community College and Davenport University. Fred was a substitute teacher for the Johannesburg – Lewiston School District for several years. After moving to Alpena in 2001, he volunteered at the Head Start Preschool and Hospice of the Sunrise Shore where he was honored with the volunteer of the year award. Fred enjoyed walking all over town with his faithful companion, Princess and friends Jim and Angela. He helped his friend, Chet with household chores. Fred touched many lives and had a way with words, he was able to talk with anyone, especially the elderly and children.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Debbie; three wonderful children whom he was very proud of and their accomplishments, Aimee Oliva of El Mirage, Arizona, Anella Oliva of Lexington, Tennessee and Bob (Jessica Jacobs) Oliva of Sisseton, South Dakota; his father, Robert Oliva of Maryland; six sisters, Janice Oliva, Mary (Rich) Backs, Kit Oliva, Angie (Erick) Sirvas, Anella J. Oliva, and Cheryl (Michael) Abee; many nieces and nephews; three honorary grandchildren, Remington, Allan and Noah; and his extended neighborhood family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna; brother, Bob; in-laws, John and Sharon Gardner; sister-in-law, Dawn Gardner.
Full military honors and inurnment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly at a later date.
Memorials may be given to McLaren Hospice to benefit the Alpena/Rogers City Area.
