Gladys Sobek
1921 - 2015Gladys Sobek age 94 of Posen passed away at home
on Thursday, May 7, 2015.
She was born February 14, 1921 in Hamtramck
to Walter and Antoinette (Dziuba) Grocholski,
Gladys and her family moved to Posen when she was a toddler. She
completed 8th grade and stayed on the family farm to help her parents.
Gladys worked in Detroit for 1 year during World War II. She married
Joseph Sobek at St. Casimir Catholic Church on July 22, 1944, They
settled on his farm in Posen Township where they remained and worked
for the rest of their lives. Joe died on May 5, 1994.
Gladys was a dedicated home maker, an enthusiastic field hand, creative
cook, gentle nurse and talented gardener. She taught and guided her five
children in the value of hard work, a good education and the need to help
others in the community. Gladys was an active member of St. Casimir
Rosary Sodality and a charter member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary in
Posen. She contributed generously of her time and talents whenever the
need arose in the extended family or neighborhood.
Mrs. Sobek is survived by:
5 children, Stanley (Susan) Sobek of Posen,
Carolyn (Ray) Haske of Hawks,
Marcia (Emery) Elliott of Kansas,
Sandra (Ron) Krawezak of Rogers City and
Laurie (Edwin) Krajniak of Posen;
24 grandchildren;
41 great grandchildren;
1 great-great grandchild;
3 sisters, Virginia Lewandowski of Presque Isle, Lillian Sparks of Virginia
and Evelyn Sims of Detroit.
She was also preceded in death by:
3 brothers, Stanley, Alfred and John Grocholski;
1 sister, Helen McIntyre;
1 grandson, Todd Haske;
2 great grandsons, Benjamin Kroll and Rory Keaney,.
Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home on Sunday from 4:00 until
8:00 p.m. with rosary at 6:30 led by the Posen VFW Auxiliary and the
Rosary Sodality; the parish wake service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with
Fr. Arthur Duchnowicz conducting.
Visitation will resume at St. Casimir Catholic Church on Monday from
10:00 a.m. through time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Arthur Duchnowicz
officiating. VFW Auxiliary will offer their tribute immediately following
Mass
Interment will follow at St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to St. Casimir Catholic Church, Hospice of the
Sunrise Shore or St. Ignatius Catholic School in memory of Gladys Sobek.
