John Dennis
1927 - 2016John Dennis passed away at his home in Onaway
on Friday, May 20, 2016, at the age of 89.
John is survived by:
his children, Shereen Emmi of Gladstone,
Debbie Dennis of Newport,
John (Shelia) Dennis of Columbiaville,
Susan (Rod) Frain of Manistee,
David (Kammiec) Dennis of Onaway,
Lesia (Mark) Farner of Petoskey,
Penny (Tim) Treadway of Cheboygan,
Kelly Darga of Rogers City,
Ernie (Bambi) Dennis of Bozeman, Montana;
21 bright and beautiful grandchildren and
21 adorable great grandchildren.
He is also survived by 2 sisters, Maggie Dunbar of Onaway and
Kathleen Kowalski of Rogers City
He was preceded in death by:
his parents;
wife, Libby;
daughter, Cheryl Dean;
son-in-law, Bill Dean and
sister, Thora Bannon.
John was born on April 15, 1927 in St. Ignace, Michigan to
Bertha (Dumas) and Ernest Dennis.He attended Onaway High School and
graduated in 1945. He enlisted in the Air Force on December 7, 1945 and
served in WW II until 1949, John married Libby (Sellars) Dennis on
March 15, 1956. They made their home in Dearborn Heights where John
worked for Firestone Tire and later owned and operated “The Fish Bowl,”
where he learned to raise fresh water fish in salt water conditions. After
moving back to Onaway in 1970, John worked for the Oil/Gas Industry
while he and Libby owned and operated the Rec Room, He later became
a Drywall Contractor and worked closely with all his children in the
business, He was a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and
was proud and passionate about his Ojibway culture and history where
he passed his native heritage onto his children, grandchildren and
great grandchildren, John was a skilled and knowledgeable outdoorsman
He could often be found ice fishing on Lake Nettic, spending the day
patiently waiting for a bite in the “Ice Condo.”
A private family service will be held at a later date
The family would like to thank Vital Care and Hospice for all their
efforts, care and dedication for Dad.
