John Nowak1938 - 2024
John Louis “Jack” Nowak age 85 of Rogers City passed quietly away at home on January 11, 2024 with family and friends nearby.
He was born in Alpena on December 19, 1938 to Louis and Agnes (Filarski) Nowak.
Following graduation from high school, Jack enlisted and served in the United States Army for two years. When he returned home, he began working as a meat-cutter at his dad’s store, Shorty’s IGA. Jack will be remembered as a loving husband and awesome dad. Jack enjoyed golfing. He spent many hours rebuilding a “fixer-upper” cottage on Grand Lake which he and his first wife, Janice purchased. They also purchased the Yerks Farm for hunting property. He and his son, John spent many hours hunting on the land, John eventually built his home on the property. After Jack’s dad retired and sold the IGA, Jack and his brother, Gary opened Nowak’s Discount in Rogers City. Eventually the store closed, and Jack went sailing on the Great Lakes. Following his retirement from sailing, he spent many years caring for his dad.
Jack is survived by his significant other, Gail Repke-Warren. In 2013 they reconnected after many-many years. Gail moved back to the area, she and Jack enjoyed 10 years together.
He is also survived by two sons, John (Lisa) Nowak and Tom Nowak; five grandchildren, Mike Nowak, Andy Nowak, Alysa Nowak, Hayley (Ian) Nowak and Brayden Nowak; two brothers, Gary (Joan) Nowak and Chuck Nowak; his sister, Mary (John) McLean; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Nowak; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Agnes; and a brother, Jim Nowak.
Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home on Saturday, January 20th from 10 a.m. through time of his celebration of life beginning at 11 a.m. with an honors tribute accorded by the Posen VFW Post 7804.
A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow in the San Luis Rey Room.
