Karl Daniels
1943 - 2011Karl Neil Daniels, aged 67, of Rogers City,
beloved husband, father and grandfather,
passed away into the arms of his Heavenly Father
at Spectrum Health – Butterworth in Grand Rapids
early Monday morning on February 7, 2011, after
a valiant year long battle with cancer.
Karl was born in Rogers City, Michigan on October 14, 1943
to Karl and Mary (McKinnon) Daniels who preceded him in death.
Karl graduated from Rogers City High School and attended Alpena Community
College and Delta College where he graduated with academic honors in basic
police training and was at the top of the class in marksmanship. Karl began his
distinguished law enforcement career in 1967 at the Rogers City Police Department
where he worked for two years followed shortly by 18 years of dedicated service for
the Presque Isle Sheriff’s Department. While at the Sheriff’s Department, Karl was
promoted to Sergeant in 1977 and dutifully fulfilled many areas of responsibility
and was widely recognized for his contributions to the department and community.
After retirement from the Sheriff’s Department in 1989, Karl worked as a
Fire/Safety Officer at the Phelps Collins Air National Guard Base; and then as a
licensed insurance agent for CUNA Mutual Insurance Group and Liberty Mutual.
Karl was a passionate man whose interests and hobbies were varied and vast in his
personal life and in his community. Karl was a member and past president of
Rogers City Optimist Club; a member and past secretary of Rogers City
Serviceman’s Club; a member of Fraternal Order of Police; and a member of the
National Society for the Sons of the American Revolution. He volunteered as
Assistant Fire Chief for the Rogers City Fire department for nine years and was a
licensed EMT. Karl served as assistant Scout Master and Explorer Scout Leader for
Boys Scouts of America and as Trustee for St. John Lutheran Church. His hobbies
also found him immersed in photography, sailing, boating, hunting, mechanics,
politics, shooting and firearms; and his love of flying earned him a private pilot’s
license.
Karl was also an extremely patriotic man who loved his country and was proud of
his Scottish heritage.
He had a marvelous capacity to remember names and events and was known as a
man of his word. He was a gifted story and joke teller and had a wonderful and
often mischievous sense of humor, with a hearty, contagious laugh to match.
Karl had a life-long thirst for learning and quest for more knowledge. He didn’t
want to be interrupted while watching Jeopardy. His circle of friends was wide and
deep and he was passionately devoted to the members of his family, especially his
precious grandchildren,
Karl is survived by:
the love of his life, his wife of 45 years, Dorothy (Schultz) Daniels;
daughters, Molly (Jocl) VanDecRict and Heather Bazany (fiance Earl Herrmann);
son, Karl Daniels II (Jody);
six grandchildren, Samuel and Lydia VanDeRiet; Cullen and Connor Bazany,
Holden and Sofia Daniels;
his sisters, Mary Ann Morley and Claire (David) Storms;
twin brother, Harry (Sally) Daniels; and
numerous nieces and nephews
Karl was preceded in death by:
his parents, Karl and Mary;
sisters, Shirley Pearse and Peggy Grigg; and
in-laws, Albert and Gladys Schultz
The family will greet relatives and friends at Beck Funeral Home on
Thursday, February 10 from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 11th at
St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. Schreiber officiating. Visitation will begin
at 10:00 a.m.
Interment will be at Memorial Park cemetery.

St. John Lutheran Church.
