Larry “Butch” Groff

On June 10, 2021 Larry “Butch” Groff age 76 of Cheboygan passed away following a long-fought battle with lung cancer.

Larry was born September 18, 1944 to  Merle and Marjorie (Oleson) Groff in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Larry married Sharon Gouine July 20, 1968, at St. Mary’s Church. The couple  moved to Cheboygan in 1969 and celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in July of 2020.

Larry worked as a foreman for Iowa Limestone in Alden, IA and made bricks at Iowa Cement before moving permanently to Cheboygan. While living in Cheboygan Larry worked for Gouine Construction and the Shell Gas Station for 11 years. He was a co-owner and operator of an adult foster care home on South River Rd during the 1990s.

He was loved by his wife and children and was known for telling jokes and arguing to “get someone’s goat.” Later in life, Larry enjoyed playing cards, talking about the weather, gardening, raising pigs and turkeys, spending time with his family, and having a good phone conversation.

Larry is survived by his wife, Sharon; his children, Scott Groff, Shannon (Tony) Peterson, and Bryan (Sandy) Groff, all of Cheboygan; granddaughter, Amber Williamson of Colorado Springs, CO; brother, Gary (Sharon) Groff, of Iowa Falls, Iowa; sisters, Sharon (Jim) Groff of Iowa Falls, Iowa and Sandi (Phil) Thorson of Marshalltown, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his brother, Terry “Tub” Groff and sister, Coninie Allen, both of Iowa Falls, IA.

Friends may visit at the Berean Bible Church in Topinabee on Thursday, June 17th from 10:30 through time of his memorial service at 11 a.m. with Pastor David Gearhart officiating.

Inurnment will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.
