Loren Gibbons

1938 - 2020

Loren Kenneth Gibbons age 81 of Bois Blanc Island passed away on November 27, 2020 while staying with his daughter in Kingsley.

Loren loved flying his Tiger Grumman airplane, a good game of golf, and his home and friends on Bois Blanc Island. Loren created custom designs in his woodshop, played the harmonica, and enjoyed cooking up a blueberry pancake breakfast for family and friends.

He was born on December 13, 1938 in Cheboygan to Glenn and Mayme (Babcock) Gibbons and was taken by sled across to Bois Blanc Island one month later. He spent much of his formative years on the island and loved to share stories of his unique childhood. Loren graduated from Cheboygan High School and went on to earn degrees from Albion College and the University of Kansas, Lawrence. Loren worked as a research chemist until he retired in 2000, when he moved back to Bois Blanc Island with his wife Marcia. Loren served as the Township Supervisor for ten years and was instrumental in paving the runway and the building of the Bois Blanc Island airport terminal. He was always ready to lend a hand or whatever was needed.

He is survived by daughter, Susan Gibbons, and grandchildren Aimee, Dan (spouse), David, and Kellie. His son, Ken Gibbons, step-son Peter Caldwell and grandson Michael. His sister Glenda DeLaMater and brother Kevin Gibbons and their families along with lots of cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marcia, mother Mayme Gibbons, father Glenn Gibbons, and brother Gene Gibbons.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for late spring of 2021 on Bois Blanc Island.
