passed away May 31, 2011 at home
Mary was born April 7, 1917 in Hawks
to Anthony and Elizabeth (Schefke) Kowalski
On May 12, 1941 she married Louis Hilla, they resided in the Detroit area during
their married life. Mary moved back to Rogers City in 1988 following Louis’
passing in 1987. Mary spent most of her life caring for her family. She worked as a
Nurse’s Aid for over 10 years at Abbey’s Nursing Home in Warren and Holy Cross
Hospital in Detroit in the 70’s. In her younger years she sewed gowns, clothing and
costumes for her children. Mary was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, watching every
game on TV and knowing all the players by name, She enjoyed spending time with
her grandchildren, crocheting, gardening, listening and dancing to polish or country
music. She also loved playing cards and dice with friends and family. She will be
missed by all.
Mrs. Hilla was a loving mother to Audrey (Walt) Vekaryasz, Shirley Burns,
Jean (Gregory) Castle, Randy Hilla, Thomas (Darla) Hilla, Kenneth Hilla, and
Brian Hilla.
She is survived by two daughters-in-law, Cora (Jim) and Lauretta (Terry).
She was preceded in death by:
her parents, Anthony and Elizabeth;
husband, Louis;
five children, James, Arlene, Terrance, and two infants;
one son-in-law, William Burns, and
5 siblings, Cecelia Sobeck, Amelia Jozwiak, Eugenia Lamb,
Anthony (Emil) Kowalski, and Louis Kowalski.
She has 23 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren and 21 great-great grandchildren.
Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home on Thursday from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m.
where the rosary will be recited at 6:30 followed by the parish prayer service at
7:00 p.m. with Sr. Rita Epple conducting. Visitation will resume on Friday at
St. Ignatius Catholic Church from 9:00 a.m. through time of mass at 10:00 a.m. with
Fr, Arthur Duchnowicz will officiating.
Interment will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Alpena.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of the Sunrise Shore, or
St. Ignatius Catholic Church in memory of Mary Hilla.
