Ruth Basel

1917 - 2016

Ruth Esther Basel, dear mother, grandmother
and great grandmother went to be with her
Heavenly Fatheron March 25, 2016 surrounded
by her children.

Ruth was born October 15, 1917 to
Reinhard and Gertrude (Schaedig) Pauly
and grew up on the family farm in Moltke.

Mrs. Basel is survived by:
3 children, Joan (Ronald) Altman, Marcia Pidgen and Terry (Anne) Basel;
seven grandchildren, Terri (Mike) Koss, Timothy (Kathy) Altman,
Tammi Altman, Scott (Jessica) Wickersham,
Elizabeth Wickersham, Benjamin (Samantha) Basel
and Ashley (Caleb) Montroy;
seven great grandchildren, Meagan, Brendan, Matthew, Kyrsten, Emma,
Joshua and Jacob.
She also leaves behind special nieces, Deanna, Rosemary, Laurie, Marilyn
and Judy.

She was preceded in death by:
her husband, Bud;
3 sisters, Johanna Billings, Alice Rieger and Esther Vogler;
brother, Louis Pauly and
son-in-law, Gary Pidgen.

Ruth was confirmed in her faith on June 7, 1931 at Immanuel Lutheran
Church in Moltke, While she was young she traveled Detroit where she
worked as a house keeper and factory worker during World War II but
always made her way back in the fall to help her dad with harvesting.
On February 18 1946 she married Royal “Bud” Basel and they made their
home in Rogers City.
Ruth was an avid flower gardener and was often found outside moving or
planting something. She was active in St. John Lutheran Church in
Rogers City with the Altar Guild, Ladies Aid and many other groups over
the years. Ruth was also an avid baker and not a week went by when she
did not have something homemade in her cupboard to serve guests
(She could never have enough company) but was especially famous for her
pie making (apple, lemon and butterscotch) and her turkey shaped sugar
cookies. Ruth was a wonderful storyteller and often entertained guests
with her adventurous tales from her childhood. She also spent many
years volunteering at Seconds on Third Resale Shop.

Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home on Sunday from 5:00 until
8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at
St. John Lutheran Church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. through time of
funeral at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Eric Voight officiating.

Interment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to St. John Radio Fund, Hospice of the Sunrise
Shore or to a charity of your choice in memory of Ruth Basel.
