Steven Crooks

1950 - 2026

Steven Scott Crooks, age 75, of Levering, passed away June 16, 2026, at Medilodge in Rogers City.

He was born July 12, 1950, in Garrett, Indiana, to Darel and Edna (Ribeiro) Crooks.

Steve dedicated much of his life to broadcasting and helping local businesses grow through his work with Black Diamond Broadcasting. A familiar voice heard in countless commercials across Northern Michigan, Steve was known not only for his professionalism and creativity but also for the genuine relationships he built with clients, coworkers, and friends. He remained passionate about serving his clients and being part of the Black Diamond family throughout his final days. To many, Steve was far more than a salesperson—he was a trusted advisor, a loyal friend, and an unwavering advocate for the people and communities he served.

His love of animals led him to become involved with the Northern Michigan Animal Rescue Network, where he adopted many cherished companions. Steve also enjoyed spending time at the casino and never missed an opportunity to share his quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and memorable stories.

He is survived by four children, Karen (David) Gonyea, Andrew Crooks, Amanda Goodnight, and Maren (Steve) Donaldson; five grandchildren; two brothers, David Crooks and Dennis (Jeannie) Crooks; and his beloved four-legged friends, Lily Grace and Leo.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Darel and Edna Crooks, and his sister, Cathy.

Steve will be remembered for his loyalty, his unmistakable wit, his love for animals, and the lasting friendships he built throughout Northern Michigan.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be announced at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Northern Michigan Animal Rescue Network, P.O. Box 165, Topinabee, Michigan 49791, or at nmarn.org.
